Solenoid Valve - Smc

A solenoid valve is an automatic valve controlled by an electric current through an electromagnetic coil (solenoid), and it is used to regulate the flow of liquids or gases.

A solenoid valve functions like an automatic switch that determines whether a fluid (such as water, air, oil, or gas) is allowed to flow or not. When electric current is applied to the solenoid, a magnetic field is generated, which pulls a plunger (a small metal rod) inside the valve. This movement of the plunger opens or closes the flow path, depending on the valve type (Normally Closed or Normally Open).

 

Clear Definition of a Solenoid Valve:

A solenoid valve is an automatic valve that uses electrical energy to control the flow of fluids (liquids or gases) with the help of a magnetic field generated by a solenoid (electromagnetic coil).

🧩 How It Works (Brief Explanation):

  1. A solenoid valve consists of two main parts:
    • Solenoid (electromagnet): Converts electrical energy into mechanical motion.
    • Valve: Opens or closes the flow of fluid.
  2. When electric current flows into the solenoid, it generates a magnetic field.
  3. This magnetic field pulls a plunger (small iron rod) inside the valve.
  4. The movement of the plunger opens or closes the fluid flow channel.

⚙️ Functions of a Solenoid Valve:

  • Automatically controls the flow of water, air, steam, oil, or gas.
  • Replaces manual valves with electrically-operated automation.
  • Can be integrated with sensors, PLCs, timers, and other control systems.

📚 Types of Solenoid Valves Based on Default Position:

  • Normally Closed (NC): Valve is closed when power is off, and opens when power is on.
  • Normally Open (NO): Valve is open when power is off, and closes when power is on.
